Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar (B.J.B.) Autonomous College, one of the premier educational institutions in Odisha, stands as an embodiment of quality, excellence, and leadership.
Established by the Government of Odisha in 1957, the college traces its roots to the historic “Science College.” It was later renamed to honor the great freedom fighter and pioneer of the Paika Rebellion, Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar Bhramarabara Ray Mahapatra, whose indomitable spirit is immortalized by the statue installed in front of the Administrative Block in 1974.
Since shifting to its present sprawling campus in 1962, the college has evolved continuously. Affiliated with Utkal University, Vani Vihar, it achieved a significant milestone in 1999 when it was conferred Autonomous status by the UGC. Today, B.J.B. Autonomous College is a beacon of holistic education, accredited with an ‘A’ Grade by NAAC in two consecutive cycles (2004 and 2016).

Bridging Life Sciences and Computational Intelligence
The Department of Bioinformatics at B.J.B. Autonomous College was established in 2007 under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode to address the growing demand for interdisciplinary science in the 21st century.
We are dedicated to the interface of biology, computer science, and statistics. Our department offers a robust Integrated M.Sc. in Bioinformatics (5 Years) program, affiliated with Utkal University. The curriculum is designed to transform students into skilled bioinformaticians capable of solving complex biological problems using advanced computational tools.
Our Mission:
To impart generic knowledge and skills in the field of Life Science and Computer Science.
To provide the necessary mathematical and statistical foundation that underpins bioinformatics.
To equip students with web-based programming skills relevant to processing biological data (Perl, Python, Java, C++).

Computational Lab: A dedicated computer laboratory featuring high-end workstations essential for molecular modeling, simulations, and data analysis.
Wet Lab Facilities: We provide hands-on training with modern equipment including PCR Thermal Cyclers, Spectrophotometers, DNA Isolation Kits, UV Transilluminators, pH Meters, and Gel Electrophoresis units.
Library Resources: Access to a vast collection of books and digital resources covering Genomics, Proteomics, Drug Design, and Artificial Intelligence in Biology.
